RECYCLE OF ALUMINIUM COFFEE CAPSULES: ITALIAN RESULTS

Almost three years after the start of the Ecolaboration project, the results of the collection, recovery and recycling of aluminium Nespresso coffee capsules in Italy are very good.

Currently in Italy there are 30 Nespresso Boutiques and all are collection centres, scattered in 20 towns and cities in different parts of Italy:

Turin, Genoa, Milan, Monza, Bergamo, Brescia, Como, Varese, Padua, Verona, Treviso, Bolzano, Bologna, Modena, Parma, Florence, Rome, Naples, Bari and Catania.

This extended network offers Nespresso customers the opportunity to participate in a great environmental project that can ensure the recovery of important resources, which are otherwise destined to be disposed of in landfills:

  • one is aluminium, the material the capsules are made from, which can be fully recycled an unlimited number of times, with considerable reduction of energy and material consumption (up to 95%);
  • the other is residual coffee, which is sent to composting facilities for rice fields that Nespresso has destined to the Banco Alimentare onlus (a socially useful NPO).

In 2013 299 tons of used capsules were collected and recycled in Italy.

Several million items were delivered by consumers to the collection points that Nespresso, with the collaboration and support of CIAL set up in each of the boutiques in the country.

Compared to the quantities collected in 2012 there was a 76% increase in the amount sent to recycling.

In each of the 20 involved cities and towns, according to an agreement between Nespresso, CIAL and Federambiente, the project includes a service for the collection of the capsules delivered by consumers.

The service is managed by municipal administrations and/or the company that deals with urban waste in that area. Aluminium recycling in foundries is guaranteed by the CIAL Consortium, whereas Nespresso manages the composting of coffee residues directly.
